Overview

46-year-old male, diagnosed with Schizoaffective disorder, Manic type.
Client use to live and look after his father before his father developed Dementia, and moved to a Care Home. Client therefore was made homeless

Referral Reason

 

He was referred to Southcroft Lodge because he needed an accommodation where he can stay before moving to a permanent placement, as he was homeless and required support with his mental health.

Challenges

Challenges behaviour:

  • Daily accusing staff of entering his room and taking his belongings
  • With staff Playing loud music past midnight which disturbed other residentssupport and direction, she was able to start engaging in her personal care and washing her clothes
  • Client awake in the night crying, saying he is hearing voices and that someone was trying to get into his room
  • Client was suspected of dealing with drugs at his previous accommodation
  • Not taking his medication regularly

Support from Staff


  • Proving Information to Enable Control:
    Staff reminded client about room checks protocol in the morning and again, as a second reminder, before they knocked on his door in the morning to carry out Welfare Check

  • Personalised Support Plan
    Staff negotiated with him to reach an agreement around reasonable music levels, and cut-off time

  • Utilising Interests and Talents
    Staff supported client to find a community workshop where he could express himself creatively through music and made a Referral to ‘Raw studio’ – a mental health well-being programme partnering with SLaM

  • Addressed Mental State:
    Highlighted concerns about his mental state to his care co-ordinator. Staff set up a professionals meeting with his CMHT, our support staff and GP. Client’s medication was reviewed.

Positive Outcomes:

  • Client able to address low mood by composing music and writing poetry
  • Increased motivation to engage in community activities – looking forward to joining Raw Studio sessions
  • Mental state has stabilised, and he is taking his medication with support from our staff
  • No evidence of dealing illicit drugs in this placement
